I used to keep a journal when I was younger that I would write in almost every day for about 10 years. I don’t have the journals any longer as they were destroyed by my ex-wife when we went through a particularly nasty divorce.
After that Iife took over and there were always so many others things that needed my attention, I wrote very little. However, what I did do was tell stories. Stories about my life. In fact there is a rich tradition of story telling in my family. I am the latest incarnation of story teller. Then in Feb 2016 tragedy struck our family. From the ashes of the pain and suffering I received a gift. A blank notebook from a deceased love one which I determined to make good use of. Inspiration was slow in coming but finally I knew. It would become a book of gratitude in which each day or as often as I could start each day writing three things I was grateful for. The only entry that varies from that was the first. It was in remembrance of the one we lost. A record of a moment that was painful and we stumbled unsteadily along a difficult path. Then five years later the latest entry is my gratitude for you guys. So I have been writing for years and didn’t fully appreciate it until the world changed and I found the love I had always longed for.
At the beginning of April 2020 I moved in with a new partner in an apartment in Bournville Village in Birmingham, opposite the Cadbury Factory. In the following weeks my attempts to find a new job were proving fruitless. A few weeks later my new partner asked me a question. ‘If you could do anything at all with your life right now, money no object. What would you do?’ and in a flash I gave my answer ‘Oh that’s easy. I have been threatening to write a memoir. That’s what I would do.’ Then my partner simply said ‘Then do it.’ I was stunned I didn’t know what to say. I would have to think about it a bit more. Which I did. My solution was that if I didn’t have a full-time job then I would occupy my time being a house husband. I would make sure that all the household chores would be done. I would cook, clean, shop, iron and lots of other little things besides. Then in the times in between I would write. I began writing on 29th April 2020. It has been a bit like a gigantic roller coaster ride since then. I do now have a first draft of one memoir written. With a third of it already completed the first re-write. In addition I have also completed a third of a second memoir. In addition I have completed other writings. I do now consider myself a writer. Maybe one day I might even be a pretty decent writer. Who knows? What I do know is that I will keep on writing from now on. Being part of this group has helped my writing come on leaps and bounds. I would like to thank you all for your feedback and continual support. Keep being awesome. Tom.
I am always interested in how my work has touched my readers and welcome comments and suggestions. From time to time I may set up a poll asking a specific questions and would be grateful if you could take a moment to answer those. Your comments and suggestions are very valuable to me. They keep me motivated and buoy me up when I’m feeling less than marvellous.
